Warne explains Warne

Shane Warne yesterday described his approach to each of the balls in his historic hat-trick in the second Test match at Melbourne.

PHILLIP DEFREITAS: "It was a leg-break that Daffy probably should have gone forward to. Luckily for me, he played back and it hit him on the back leg without turning very much."

DARREN GOUGH: "Goughy has shown a fair bit of determination with the bat so far this series. I just wanted to get him pushing forward. It took the outside edge and Ian Healy held a good catch. I suppose it was a pretty good ball, a leg-break with a bit of over-spin."

DEVON MALCOLM: "I thought about asking Steve Waugh or Mark Taylor what I should do because they've both played a lot of Tests. But in the end I talked to Damien Fleming because he got a hat-trick in Pakistan a couple of months ago.

"Damien said he just closed his eyes and then bowled his stock ball, the away swinger. I decided to do the same, another leg-break with over-spin. It bounced a bit more and David Boon took a brilliant, diving catch at short leg.

"I don't think I've ever run so fast as I did to get to Boony. It made me feel pretty happy. I think I've been on a hat-trick twice before in Test matches but I'd never got one in any form of cricket until today."
