Where are they now?

Having made his international name alongside such Scottish greats as Denis Law and Kenny Dalglish, it amuses Tommy Hutchison that young fans know him primarily from a Danny Baker video of football blunders.

"It includes my own goal in the 1981 Cup final," he said, referring to the moment when, having already scored for Manchester City at the other end, he deflected Glenn Hoddle's shot past Joe Corrigan to provide Tottenham with an equaliser and a replay, which they won.

One of the game's most enduring players, Hutchison, then 33, was still turning out for Swansea City 10 years later and relinquished his position as player-coach to Merthyr Tydfil, in the Vauxhall Conference, only a year ago, at 46. His record of 790 Football League appearances at five clubs is bettered only by Peter Shilton and Terry Paine. He also played 68 games in Scotland.

Three of his clubs were managed by John Bond. "He believed you were selected on how you played rather than how old you were. When I was 36 and at Burnley, I probably played the best football of my career. My last game was for Merthyr against Swansea in the Welsh Cup, when I realised I was no longer doing myself justice."

He settled in Wales and now works as Football in the Community Officer for Taff Ely Borough Council. Married for 26 years to Irene, Hutchison has a 23-year-old daughter, Lynn, a buyer for a department store, and two sons, John, 21, who maintains Harrier jump jets at RAF Wittering, and David, 18, a student at Cardiff University.
