Richard Whitaker left Pontefract races no richer yesterday despite his Our Main Man winning at 50-1.

The five-year-old had been unplaced and beaten a total of 67 lengths on his last three outings, yet stormed to the front a furlong out under rider Tony Culhane and stayed on strongly to take the Packsaddle Handicap.

Whitaker, who trains at Scarcroft, near Leeds, said: "I'm speechless. We've tried him from the front and the back but he didn't do anything. I came here with pounds 2 in my pocket and still have pounds 2 in my pocket now - there's no way I could have backed him.''

The stewards decided not to hold an inquiry into the gelding's sudden improvement.
