An 86th-minute goal from substitute David Whyte gave Charlton a fortunate FA Cup fourth- round win in front of a capacity crowd at The Valley last night.
Their Second Division opponents, a goal down at half-time, equalised in the 57th minute after Charlton's goalkeeper, Mike Salmon, blundered. However he redeemed himself with a string of fine saves as Brentford piled on the pressure.
Then, with Charlton hanging on, Paul Mortimer suddenly broke clear and was pulled down on the edge of the area by Jamie Bates and Whyte hit home his 86th minute free-kick in off the post.
Bryan Robson, the manager of off-form Middlesbrough, suffered another 90 minutes of frustration at the Riverside Stadium where Boro were held to a goalless draw by Wimbledon.
