Wire misfit Harris signs for Leeds: Rugby League

Iestyn Harris will today end his exile from the game by signing for Leeds, writes Dave Hadfield. The Great Britain stand-off, put on the transfer list at a world record pounds 1.35m last year, is currently suspended by Warrington, the latest twist in a protracted wrangle. St Helens were the favourites to sign Harris, but that deal broke down last week, leaving the way clear for Leeds, although both Wigan and Sheffield Eagles showed interest.

"Iestyn had a handshake deal with St Helens and, being the honourable person that he is, wanted to complete it. But that is now ancient history and wherever he goes he will be 100 per cent committed," his manager, Tom Carroll, said yesterday.

The Leeds chief executive, Gary Hetherington, who has called a press conference for this morning, confirmed that an offer had been made to Warrington. "Our original interest was exaggerated, because it seemed that he was determined to go to Saints. But since that deal fell through, we have looked at the situation again," he said.

Harris, still only 20, appeared in all five Tests on Great Britain's Pacific tour last autumn, but has played only one full game for Wire since last July. That makes it unlikely he will be involved in Leeds' match against Wigan tomorrow.

The future of the Castleford coach, John Joyner, was being discussed at a board meeting last night. Joyner, who joined the club as a player more than 25 years ago, has said he will stand down if the directors want him to. Castleford have lost all their games so far this season.

First Division leaders Hull have signed prop Andy Ireland and utility player Jason Donohue from Bradford on free transfers.
