The defending champion, Jan Woodley of Scotland, beat Ireland's Mary Tosh 7-3, 4-7, 7-1 in her opening match at the Churchill Insurance Women's World Indoor Championship in Cumbernauld yesterday.
Last year's beaten finalist, Mary Price of England, also made a winning start to the competition, with a 7-6, 7-2 success over the Welsh champion, Doreen Rowlands.
Ireland's Margaret Johnston, a twice former champion, recovered after dropping the opening set to beat her team-mate Pat Smythe 2-7, 7-0, 7- 6 while the newly crowned English champion, Brenda Brown, was in impressive form as she coasted to a 7-4, 7-0 win over Susan Neol of Jersey.
