Workington withstand rally

Workington got off to a flying start, scoring 16 points in 25 minutes, but then had to work hard to beat Sheffield Eagles 26-20 in a thrilling contest.

Kurt Sorensen, Workington's new coach, left the selection of the team to Billy McGinty and Phil McKenzie, who had been in charge for the pre- season work. McGinty gave Workington the lead after nine minutes and he was followed over the Sheffield line by David Fraisse and Kevin Pape.

Sheffield, who were guilty of numerous handling errors, finally got their game together in the closing minutes of the half and by the break they had cut the deficit to 16-12. David Mycoe crossed after good play by Ryan Sheridan and Andy Young, then Young put Sheridan over for the second try.

Dean Marwood landed a penalty early in the second half for Workington, but Sheffield came back with a well taken try by Paul Broadbent. It was anybody's game until Peter Livett scored an opportunist try and two more Marwood goals - giving him five for the match - proved decisive.
