Workmanlike success for Zamindar

Zamindar, a full-brother to Zafonic, gained a bloodless all-the- way victory at odds of 2-5 in the Group Three Prix de Cabourg over six furlongs at Deauville yesterday. The colt is now 7-1 from 10-1 with William Hill for next year's 2,000 Guineas.

Although most observers reckoned the win was workmanlike, rather than brilliant, the Andre Fabre-trained colt was never in danger of defeat.

He had two and a half lengths to spare over Dyhim Diamond at the line with Elle Est Revenue third and Blade Ae last of the four-runner field. Zamindar's winning time of one minute 12.8 seconds was thought good without being spectacular.

Jockey Thierry Jarnet said: "He showed some courage today, and did just what I wanted. He is the obvious favourite for the Prix Morny.''

Grant Pritchard Gordon, representing Khalid Abdullah, added: "Zamindar has had two easy races now. The Morny will be the real test."

The Group One Prix Morny, which Zafonic won back in 1992, is at Deauville on Sunday, 18 August.

n Willie Carson's return to raceriding has been put back on ice - and he may not be back in action until next week. The 53-year-old, who suffered bruising to his back and arm in a fall at Newmarket on Friday night, will not be back in action until tomorrow at the earliest.
