Zimbabwe's middle order, led by captain Andy Flower and David Houghton, restored the tourists to respectability on the first day of their three- day match against a New Zealand Academy XI in Whangarei yesterday. Sent in to bat, Zimbabwe were in trouble early at 12 for three, but recovered to declare at 274 for seven 45 minutes before the close. The bulk of Zimbabwe's runs came from four middle-order batsmen, with veteran Houghton leading the way on 86. Houghton and Flower shared an impressive 155-run fourth- wicket partnership, with Flower making 73, including 10 boundaries. At the end of the day, the Academy XI were 21 without loss.
