Welcome inventors of tomorrow!

The Independent and the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE Bristol) are running a competition to find the bright thinkers of tomorrow! Year 9 and 10 students are invited to design, create or invent what humanity needs to make the world happier, safer or more sustainable. The question is “Only YOU can Save the World: design, create or invent what humanity needs. Make the world happier, safer or more sustainable with your creation and win.” The entry can be up to 400 words and be accompanied by artwork or videos.

Pupils can win up to £100 of Amazon vouchers and the 8 finalist schools will be invited to the University of the West of England, Bristol for round 2, involving a one day competition to think creatively and intelligently under pressure. The winning team of round 2 will have robotics experts visit their school for a Robotics Workshop!

Round 1 of the competition will open on the 18th January 2016, with a closing date of 31st March 2016.

To enter round 1, you need to email the following:

Your name and the names of any team members

An explanation of your entry (400 words max)

Any supporting documentation/imagery etc

The name of your school

The name of your teacher who is nominating you

Rules

1. ‘round 1’ and ‘round 2’ are collectively referred to as the “Competition”.

Who may enter?

2. To enter the Competition, you must:

2.1. be a student in year 9 or 10;

2.2. be studying at a school located within a hundred (100) miles of the postcode BS1 5TJ (the “Eligible Schools”); and

2.3. have permission from your school and the teacher named on your entry email to nominate them for the Competition.

3. Anyone professionally connected with the Competition is not eligible.

How to enter

Round 1

4. You can enter round 1 from 09:00 on 18 January 2016 until 23:59 on 31 March 2016. Entries made after this time will not be valid, even if they appear to be registered.

5. Entry into the Competition is free.

6. To enter round 1, you must visit the Competition Website and complete the pre-populated email. Your answer to the question must be written in English and entirely your own work. You should not seek any assistance from a teacher, parent, guardian or anyone else.

7. Entries must be up to 400 words and can be accompanied by artwork and/or videos.

8. We may verify the validity of entries, disqualify any entrant and recover prizes issued to an entrant following breach of these terms and conditions.

9. Only one entry per person is permitted. More than one student from the same Eligible School may enter the Competition. However, only one team per school may be selected by the judges to attend round 2.

10. The following entries are not valid entries:

10.1. entries made in breach of these terms and conditions; and

10.2. entries with inappropriate, illegal or offensive content.

Round 2

11. Round 2 will be taking place at UWE Bristol, Coldharbour Ln, Bristol, BS16 1QY between 1 and 31 July 2016, exact date to be announced at a later date.

12. Students will be required to spend a full day at UWE Bristol. No lunch will be provided.

13. There must be at least one teacher from each school present at all times for the duration of round 2.

14. Teams must consist of max. 10 students.

15. The school will be responsible for deciding which 10 pupils will attend round 2.

16. Every student attending round 2 must have parental consent and proof supplied to UWE Bristol.

17. To enter round 2, teams will be asked to compete in a one-day competition at the Frenchay campus at UWE Bristol. Students will be shown around the facilities and, where possible, will be given the opportunity to try some out for themselves. The students will then complete a group activity which will culminate with them giving a short presentation to a panel of judges and other students.

18. The schools are responsible for their own expenses incurred in connection with Round 2, including travel and accommodation expenses.

19. Round 2 is sole responsibility of UWE Bristol.

Selecting the Winners

Round 1

20. Winners will be the the entries chosen by the judges nominated by The Independent and UWE Bristol as well as an independent judge.

21. The eight winning schools will be notified by phone by 1 July.

Round 2

22. The winning team will be the favourite entry chosen by the judging panel and will be notified during the week after the one-day competition.

23. The name of the schools participating in round 2 and the winner of the Prize will be made available to anyone sending a stamped, addressed envelope to Education Team, ESI Media, 2 Derry Street, London W8 5HF with the reference “UWE Schools Competition” within twenty eight (28) days of the published closing date. No other correspondence will be entered into.

Publicity

24. By entering the Competition, you give The Independent and UWE Bristol the right to film, sound record and photograph all your activities relating to the Competition (“Footage”). You also agree that The Independent and UWE Bristol may (but are not obliged to) use your entry, name, likeness, voice, photographs, video footage and any biographical information you provide and any statement made by you concerning the Competition (your “Content”) for all purposes related to the Competition (including the promotion thereof).

25. Where any Footage is created or your Content is used, you acknowledge that you have waived your moral rights and any copyright or similar rights and title in the Footage and Content.

26. You also agree that we, or any persons authorised either directly or indirectly by us, can use any part of the Footage and Content as we see fit. We may distribute, edit, copy, translate, distort (for artistic purposes), exhibit and exploit such Footage and/or Content for the purpose of promoting or in relation to the Competition using all media and formats. This includes social media such as Facebook and YouTube.

General

27. The prizes have no cash equivalent, and no alternatives will be offered. Prizes cannot be exchanged or transferred. However, in the event that any prize is unavailable due to circumstances beyond our control, we reserve the right to offer alternative prizes of equal or greater value.

28. These rules shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales and the courts of England shall have exclusive jurisdiction in relation to any disputes arising in respect of this Competition.
