Apple rumoured to be replacing iPhone chargers with Android cables

Apple may be changing its charger once again, which would make current chargers incompatible.

Currently, Apple iPhones are charged using lightning cables, a switch made in 2012.

But according to a new report on the supply chain blog Macotakara, the tech giant could be switching to USB-C chargers for iPhones – which already charge the iPad Pro.

The rumoured move means that the same charging cable could be used to charge Apple and Android devices – as USB-C chargers are already used by the Samsung Galaxy S9, Google Pixel 3, Razer Phone 2 and OnePlus 6.

However, it also means that the lightning charging cord, which costs $19, would be rendered useless – as would any accessories such as adapters.

On Twitter, the news of the rumoured change was met with criticism by some Apple users.

“Is this Apple’s new plan to make money? Every few years change cables and jacks and headphones? How about trying to be innovative for a change?” one person asked.

Others are praising the move – as USB-C chargers are considered superior to lightning chargers by some.

“No big deal. I am regularly buying replacement cables anyway. USB-C is more universal anyway. I think it’s a good thing,” one person said.

In addition to possibly changing the charging ports, Apple may finally be releasing its AirPower – a long-awaited wireless iPhone charger.
