Apple could launch an ‘extreme’ version of Watch, report claims

Apple is planning a new, “rugged” version of the Apple Watch, according to a new report.

While it would include the same features as the rest of the line-up, they would be included in a more rugged casing that could allow it to better withstand the knocks and pressure they might be put through by extreme sports and outdoors athletes.

For now, Apple is only “considering launching” the new Watch, according to Bloomberg, which reported the discussions.

It would not be due to be released until later this year or next at the earliest, it reported, citing people familiar with the matter who did not want to be identified.

If it is released, it will be similar to the other versions of the Watch that are currently offered, such as the cheaper Apple Watch SE and the version made in collaboration with Hermès.

Like those watches, it will include the same features and design, and work in the same way. But its body will be more resistant to impact and damage, in a way similar to Casio’s G-Shock watches, the report said.

Apple has already offered features seemingly aimed at hikers and other outdoor athletes. The new Apple Watch Series 6 and SE include always-on altimeters, allowing them to know how much a person has climbed on a hike, for instance.

New Apple Watches are usually released in September, along the iPhone. While Apple is expected to do the same this year, presumably with a Series 7, but leaks have been few and far between about the new Watch.

Rumours have suggested that the new watch could include blood glucose monitoring features and buttons that don’t actually press in but vibrate to feel like they are, similar to the touchpads on the existing MacBooks.
