Augmented reality app on top of competition at Gettie Awards

Layar, a cross-platform application that helps users contextualize their immediate surroundings with augmented reality is the overall winner of this year's Gettie Award.

The Gettie Awards Ceremony took place on July 12 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California, USA and highlighted innovative and creative mobile applications across all major mobile phone platforms.

More than 7,000 applications were nominated for the awards in the categories of best overall, Android, Blackberry, iPhone, Java, Symbian and Windows Mobile application.

"Of the apps submitted to the 2010 Getties, iPhone accounted for 26 percent of nominations, Android 20 percent, Java 18 percent, Symbian 15 percent, Blackberry 13 percent, and Windows Mobile, 9 percent," said GetJar.

Applications that helped users manage their personal data, and those that helped users reduce or eliminate costs were also among the winners of this year's awards.

Best Android application: Lookout - Helps identify and block security threats, backs up and restores a user's personal data, and can quickly find a lost or stolen phone by pinpointing its location on a Google map or sounding a loud alarm.
