California's governor plans to sign legislation that will open the way for driverless cars in the state.

Representatives say Jerry Brown is expected to sign the legislation yesterday at the headquarters of Google, which has been developing autonomous car technology and lobbying for the legislation.

Autonomous cars use computers, sensors and GPS technology to operate independently. Supporters say that they have the potential to make roads safer, pointing out that nearly all car accidents are a result of human error.

The bill would establish safety and performance regulations for autonomous vehicles.
