Energy of the Nation at the EDF Energy London Eye

Excitement is reaching fever pitch as the London 2012 Games kick off on 27 July. The eyes of the world will be on London for this sporting extravaganza. Everyone in the country will be cheering on their heroes and hoping for national sporting success. Now, thanks to EDF Energy, you can play a part by taking to Twitter to express your thoughts and feeling about the Games. This will contribute to the world’s first social media driven lightshow on the EDF Energy London Eye every night of the Olympics and Paralympics.

Over the past few years, the EDF Energy London Eye has become one of the most iconic London landmarks, and the focal point of many of the capital's big displays. Now it is set to be the centrepiece of a world first, a display that combines social media and technology to represent the sporting excitement of the nation.

Generated by the UK’s London 2012 related tweets, this social media-driven lightshow starts every night at 9pm and again at 10pm during the Games. A computer algorithm categorises the language used in all UK-based tweets about the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games and then uses it to alter the colours in the lightshow, to demonstrate people's emotions about the games.

The Energy of the Nation lightshow was launched by one of our most famous Olympians, the decathlon legend and double-gold medallist Daley Thompson, who had the honour of starting the first display.

The display will also be available to watch online at the EDF Energy of the Nation website for people who are unable to get into London to watch the live display. Sports fans from around the UK will be hoping that the map shows lots of yellow for positives tweets and not so much purple for negative tweets!

Energy Map

In addition to the lightshow, EDF Energy are also showing the data online in real time, so that people across the country can join in. The EDF Energy Map shows the same information that is used for the light display, in the form of a map of the country. Visitors to the site can look around the virtual map of the country to what the residents of each area think about the latest events.

Smartphone Apps

Owners of a smartphone or a tablet can also join in the fun with a specially designed mobile app that shows the Energy Map across the UK. iPhone and iPad owners owners can download the Energy2012 app from the Apple iTunes store and Android owners can take part by visiting the Google Play Store.
