Eurovision 2015: Twitter introduces hashflags for fans to support favourite countries

Just when you thought you didn’t need any more reason to get excited about Eurovision, Conchita Wurst has unveiled a host of Twitter hashflags in the run up to the big night.

Fans across Europe (and Australia) can now pledge allegiance to their favourite country by tweeting their national flag.

Unfortunately the Twitter hashflags won’t be counted as part of the official vote, however they will give some indication of which countries are likely to perform well.

Sweden, Italy and Australia are the three favourites to win the competition, with Russia and Estonia in close second – suggesting the five flags could be trending worldwide all night.

Eurovision 2015 marks the first time Twitter has developed flag emojis for each participating country taking part in the contest.

The Eurovision hashflags follows the popularity of similar symbols used during the 2014 World Cup and the UK General Election.

Eurovision 2015 begins at 8pm on BBC One on Saturday 23 May.
