Google Year in Search 2020 reveals the things we wanted to know most this year

Google has revealed what the country spent 2020 searching for.

its "UK Year In Search" results show all of the topics that internet users were interested in through the strange year.

The company noted that the list was wildly different this year from previous ones, largely because of the global pandemic.

That was reflected in a wide variety of "how to" questions – which include everything from making face masks to cooking eel – as well as the growth of queries about deliveries and workouts. People’s creativity in the face of lockdowns is demonstrated, with users looking for everything from ways to cut their own hair to make their own KFC, Wagamama katsu curry or Ikea meatballs.

Still, some queries are not necessarily related to the unusual year at all. The second most-searched for question this year – beating every one about coronavirus – was “Where does vanilla flavouring come from?”

In keeping with a year that many people seemed to spend mostly waiting, the “when” questions reveal people’s frustrations and confusions. The top search was “when will lockdown end?”, and eight of the ten questions were to do with pandemic-related closures; the others were “when will the new president be announced?” and “when does Love Island start?".

The full list is found below. Google is clear that its Year in Search refers specifically to trending topics – that is, ones that were particularly high in 2020 compared with previous years.
