Apple WWDC 16: iOS 10 event will take place on 13 June, Apple confirms

The first clues came from Siri, but Apple has now officially confirmed the date of the big event through its more traditional channels

Apple has set the date for the introduction of the new version of iOS.

The company is set to show off all of its new software – as well as some other new products – at its Worldwide Developer Conference. And now it has confirmed that the opening event will take place on 13 June, in San Francisco.

The company has moved the usual opening keynote to the much larger Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, potentially signalling that even more announcements than usual are set to be made.

Among the widely-anticipated announcements are the revealing of iOS 10, the operating system for iPhones and iPads. Apple will also show off the new version of OS X – and probably change its name to macOS, in line with the rest of its operating systems.

Both of those pieces of software will probably be made available very soon after the event under the beta programme. They’ll then probably arrive on the public’s devices in September, when the iPhone 7 is released.

Other possible, less likely releases include Apple showing off a new version of the Watch and updates to the MacBook line.

The date of the event was initially revealed by Siri, which would give the date 13 June to 17 June when asked. But Apple has since confirmed it through its more traditional routes, sending out invites to developer to ask them to apply for tickets.

The company holds its big announcement keynote at the beginning of the conference – 13 June. The rest of the week is then mostly made up of talks for developers, about how to use the technologies revealed at the conference.
