iPhone X price guide: Apple unveils the most expensive handset it has ever sold

It's twice as much as the original iPhone, which came out ten years ago

Apple has revealed the iPhone X, its most expensive handset yet.

It's more than twice the cost of the original iPhone, which came out ten years ago. That anniversary is marked both in the new handset's name and a number of references in Apple's launch event.

The iPhone X will start at 999 of whatever currency you use. And that will just be the beginning: the price will go all the way up to £1149 or $1149 for the larger storage option.

Apple also offers its own iPhone upgrade programme, which essentially functions as a loan that gives people a new iPhone every time one comes out. Under that plan, the phone will begin at £56.45 per month, Apple said.

The phone will be available in silver and space grey options, and 64GB or 256GB. (Apple was expected to launch a brassier "blush gold", but that's presumably been delayed until later on.)

If the price hasn't put you off, the phone won't be available to buy until the beginning of November, with pre-orders opening on 27 October. The actual release date will be 3 November in most of Apple's biggest markets.

The company hopes that it can convince people to wait and then part with more money than ever with a range of new features. Those include a screen that wraps across the front of the phone and facial recognition technology that allows people to unlock the phone with their face.

Apple will also sell a range of accessories for the new phone. Those include cases that begin at £39, a new leather "folio" that costs £99 and charging docks for £49.
