List of smartphones expected to make headlines at Mobile World Congress

Here are some of the smartphones set to generate headlines at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC), February 14-17.

LG Optimus 3D
LG will take the wraps off the world's first full 3D smartphone, the Optimus 3D at MWC. The Android-powered 3D-capable smartphone will come with a glasses-free LCD panel for autostereoscopic viewing, two cameras for 3D video recording, and diverse connectivity options such as HDMI and DLNA.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
Sony Ericsson is expected to unveil the "PlayStation phone," aka the Xperia Play - a touchscreen mobile device built for gamers with a 4" display, 5MP camera, 1GHz processor and a slide-out game controller with DualShock-style gamepad.

Sony Ericsson's Vivaz 2
The Xperia Play is not the only Xperia device expected to be revealed at MWC. Sony's Vivaz 2 (aka MT15i, aka Halon/Hallon, aka Xperia Neo), an Android-powered device with a 1GHz processor, a 480x854p display is also rumored to get a MWC launch.

Samsung Galaxy S2
Samsung's MWC announcment is said to be arriving in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S2 (internally codenamed "Seine"), a smartphone with a 1GHz dual core processor, a 4.3 or 4.5-inch Super AMOLED plus screen, an 8 MP camera, a NFC chip and Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.  

RIM BlackBerry Dakota
Research In Motion is expected to show off its next flagship device, the BlackBerry Dakota. The smartphone has a 2.8" touchscreen and a full QWERTY keyboard as well as a 5MP camera and HD video recording capabilities. Its specs are said to be "head and shoulders above all other BlackBerry specs" but bloggers are not sure if that will be enough to make it in the current cut-throat smartphone world.

Reports are surfacing that HTC will use its MWC press conference to unveil an Android-powered social network phone. Other details about the device are scarce.
