YouTube star Logan Paul issues video apology for hanging man footage

Thousands of people are calling for Logan Paul’s YouTube channel to be deleted, after he published a video that includes footage of a corpse.

A petition titled “Delete Logan Paul’s YouTube Channel” has attracted more than 57,000 signatures at the time of publication, but it’s rapidly gaining support.

However, there’s no guarantee that the pressure will lead to YouTube actually getting rid of Logan Paul’s account.

Users of the site that are upset with the video creator can instead show their displeasure by simply unsubscribing from his channel.

At the time of publication, Logan Paul’s account – Logan Paul Vlogs – has more than 15 million subscribers, though this figure could change significantly as the fallout from the controversy continues and the the account attracts more and more attention as a result of it.

The process of unsubscribing from a channel is very straightforward.

On mobile:

  • Open the YouTube app
  • If you’re on the Home tab, tap the channel icon below the video whose channel you want to unsubscribe from, tap Subscribed, and select OK from the popup box
  • If you’re watching a video whose channel you want to unsubscribe from, tap the Subscribed button below the video, and select OK from the popup box

On desktop:

  • Open the YouTube site and ensure you’re signed in to your account
  • Go to a video whose channel you want to unsubscribe from
  • Under the video player, click Subscribed and select Unsubscribe from the popup box

A notification confirming that you have unsubscribed from the channel will then appear at the bottom of your screen, and links to their videos will stop automatically appearing on your main feed.

Logan Paul issued a video apology on Tuesday, in which he said, “I want to apologise to the internet. I want to apologise to anyone who has seen the video. I want to apologise to anyone who has been affected or touched by mental illness, or depression, or suicide. But most importantly I want to apologise to the victim and his family.

“For my fans who are defending my actions, please don’t. I don’t deserve to be defended.”

YouTube, which has also been criticised for allowing the video to be featured in its Trending section, has confirmed that the video broke its rules and also released a statement.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the person featured in the video,” a spokesperson for the site said.

“YouTube prohibits violent or gory content posted in a shocking, sensational or disrespectful manner. If a video is graphic, it can only remain on the site when supported by appropriate educational or documentary information and in some cases it will be age-gated.”
