Pluto: live updates as Nasa shows stunning new pictures from New Horizons craft

Craft has successfully made it past the dwarf planet — and now scientists wait to hear what it's found

Nasa has successfully completed one of the most high-risk and high-profile missions of recent times, sending a spacecraft to skirt past Pluto and take pictures of the dwarf planet, which has remained remarkably mysterious to us until now.

The craft has sent back word that it has successfully made it around the planet, and is healthy. But those messages come back so slowly that it will be many hours before the scientists know anything of use.

Nasa is holding a conference this evening, showing off some of the findings. Those include the surprise announcement that Pluto is covered in huge icy mountains, and new pictures of Charon, Pluto's moon.
