'Resident Evil' salvo includes 3DS, HD remakes, new game

A barrage of information regarding Resident Evil's 15th anniversary has been unleashed by Capcom, confirming not only a release date for a 3DS game but also plans for high definition re-releases and a new title in the making.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries for the Nintendo 3DS has been given a Japanese release date of June 2.

The game is a standalone version of a popular bonus mode found within Resident Evil 4 and 5, and will include support for online or local co-operative play.

Resident Evil: Revival Selection contains remastered versions of both Resident Evil 4 and Code Veronica. For North America and Europe the two titles will be issued separately as downloads for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in autumn, as opposed to Japan's combined release.

Lastly, the May issue of North America's Official Xbox Magazine is understood to carry news of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City.

Slant Six Games has been tasked with its development now that Zipper Interactive has taken charge of Slant Six's previous gig, the SOCOM Navy Seals franchise.

Instead of putting players in the shoes of familiar heroes, ORC sides with a tactical assault squad employed by Umbrella Security Services squad, the shadowy corporation bent on developing the series' "bio-organic weapon monsters."

Resident Evil has been credited with popularizing the "survival horror" genre, though its creator has since flown the coop, currently working on June's Shadows of the Damned for the 360 and PS3.
