Samsung is developing two new foldable phones as successors to its recently unveiled Galaxy Fold smartphone, a new report claims.

Both devices will be significantly different from their predecessor in terms of their folding mechanics.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, which features a small screen on one side and a larger screen that unfolds from the inside like a book, Samsung plans to borrow a design used by its rival Huawei for one of the new phones.

Huawei's Mate X unfolds from a single screen that wraps around the outside of the device when it is folded.

The second new folding phone will be a clamshell-like device that folds vertically, potentially similar to the forthcoming Motorola Razr.

Rumours of the new foldable phones come from sources cited by Bloomberg, who claim to be familiar with the South Korean technology giant's plans.

Despite proving to be a popular trend among smartphone manufacturers at this years Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, it is unclear how much consumer demand there is for folding phones.

The Galaxy Fold costs £2,000 but is yet to be released, while no sales or pre-order figures are available from any other company working on the technology. Samsung has reportedly said it plans to build at least 1 million foldable phones in 2019.

Manufacturers will be hoping the innovative new design will help revive a flagging smartphone market, which has seen global sales fall for the past two years.

A new report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that worldwide smartphone shipments will fall for the the third consecutive year in 2019.

The two new foldable phones from Samsung are expected to be unveiled either later this year or early in 2020, with prototypes already built of the Mate X-style phone.

Samsung does not publicly comment on rumours surrounding unreleased products.
