Netflix and Sky Q team up, allowing people to watch Stranger Things on their TV box

Netflix's huge selection of films and TV is finally coming to Sky.

The Sky Q box will soon be able to show the various video offered by Netflix, the two companies have said. New and existing customers will be able to watch Netflix through their box and by paying through their subscription, for the first time.

That will allow the Netflix shows like Stranger Things or Orange Is The New Black on the Sky Q box. They will be able to make full use of Sky Q functionality, including its menus, voice search and other tools.

It will also be bundled into the Sky subscription, meaning that people will only have to pay once for their TV watching. Existing Netflix customers will be able to migrate their account into their Sky TV bundle.

“We are delighted to partner with Sky to bring the latest technologies and great stories under the same roof," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. "With this innovative new partnership and Netflix’s stellar line up of original content from across the world, Sky's customers will be able to seamlessly access and enjoy all the best entertainment in one place.”

Sky Q does have the ability to watch online video that isn't part of a traditional on-demand service, which are integrated into the normal Sky Q service. But for the moment that only really applies to YouTube, which has an app on the Sky Q box.

It isn't clear if Netflix will work like YouTube does, or more similar to traditional services like BBC iPlayer. But Sky said they would be "promoted alongside Sky content", suggesting they won't be stuck in their own app.

The two companies didn't confirm when the features would start arriving, committing only to "the coming year". It will arrive in the UK and Ireland initially, coming to Germany, Austria and Italy after that.
