Sky Q finally adds mobile app, letting people watch TV on their iPhone or Android phone

The new app lets people watch things on the move – something that was only possible previously if you had a tablet

The Sky Q app has finally been launched for phones, fixing the biggest issue with the service.

Sky Q was launched earlier this year, bringing with it an entirely new service that is mostly powered by a redesigned Sky box. That box allows people to watch TV and films on other boxes in their homes, or on their tablets.

And now they’ll finally be able to watch those same recordings on their phone. Though some functionality has been available through the old Sky+ app, the release marks the first time that customers can get Sky Q on their phone.

It has been released for Android and iPhone and is available on the respective app stores now.

Sky pitches Q as a way of watching all of your recordings anywhere – its central feature is fluid viewing, which means that all of your recordings are available on any device, and save your progress so that you can pick up where you finished.

But that has been slightly stunted by the fact that the company doesn’t offer a mobile app, and so the device that most people have with them most of the time isn’t actually supported.

The new mobile app gives access to all of the features that would be expected to be available. That includes recordings, so that people can watch what they’ve recorded at home on their phone; remote recordings so that if people forget to record something it can be set from afar; and other features like Top Picks and My Q that make it easy to pick up new or existing series.

The company said that it had made the mobile app so that people could watch on the move and on their own terms.

“We know Sky Q customers love the flexibility of watching TV on their terms,” said Luke Bradley-Jones, brand director of TV and content products. “The new Sky Q mobile app will give them even more freedom to watch their recordings, access Top Picks, and stream live and On Demand TV when they’re out and about. So if it’s The Night Of box set, live Premier League or Sky original The Young Pope, Sky Q customers can now look forward to their daily commute or long car journey, while they catch up on the latest and best TV from Sky.”

The new app is just one of a range of new additions to Sky Q, which was first released earlier this year. That also include the ability to watch two streams at once, and the addition of free 4K viewing for Sky Q customers.
