Popular messaging service Slack has suffered an outage affecting users around the world.

Attempts to reach the site returns a "server error" message leaving users unable to send messages or access files.

The platform has six million daily users and nine million weekly users and is used by the majority of companies in Silicon Valley, where the major technology companies are based.

It is a messaging app for teams, often used by workplaces to allow workers to communicate.

The company took to Twitter to say they were working on the problem:

“We're so sorry for this disruption to your day. We are doing all we can to get you back into your workspace,” the company said.

It can be used across multiple devices and platforms and allow users to not only chat one-on-one but also in groups.

The company was valued at almost $5bn (£3.75bn) this year after the firm received a total of $841m of funding.

Having launched in 2013, Slack became the fastest startup to become a “unicorn” – a company with a valuation of at least $1bn (£750m).
