Sony's PS4 sells more than 2.1 million consoles since launch

Initially released in the US on November 15, the console is now available in 32 countries

The next-gen PlayStation 4 console has sold more than 2.1 million units since its launch last month, Sony has announced.

The PlayStation 4, which recently became the fastest ever selling console in the UK, was first released by Sony in the US on 15 November. Since then, the Japanese firm has shifted over 2.1 million consoles across 32 countries. Of this total, around 700,000 units are said to have been snapped up in Europe and Australasia.

Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said that the sales represented an “impressive and record-setting accomplishment” by his firm.

House added: “While PS4’s capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that videogames represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to buy.”

Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4’s main competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox One, hit one million sales across 13 markets 24 hours after release (a feat that was matched by the PlayStation 4 in North America alone).
