'Strangest clock on earth' unveiled at college

A £1 million clock will be unveiled outside one of the world's most famous university colleges today.

The Corpus Clock has taken a team of specialist engineers seven years to create and will stand outside the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

It was designed by inventor John Taylor, a student at the college in the 1950s, and has been described as the strangest clock on earth.

The clock has no hands or digital numbers but a series of slits cut into cut into its 4ft wide stainless steel face - a complex arrangement of darting lights show the time.

University officials say Dr Taylor is giving the clock, which will be visible to the public, to the college.

Disabled physicist Professor Stephen Hawking, who is based at Cambridge University, will be the star guest at the unveiling ceremony.
