Weekly video game releases: 'Borderlands', 'Forza Motorsport 3', 'Pro Evolution Soccer 2010'

A selection of video games to be released during the week of October 19 including: Futuristic wild-west action on a deserted alien planet in 'Borderlands', burn rubber and your friends' best race times in 'Forza Motorsport 3', and experience top-notch football fun in 'Pro Evolution Soccer 2010'.

Astro Boy: The Video Game (DS, PS2, PSP, Wii)
Release: October 20 in North America, 2010 in the EU.
Based on the film of the same name starring Nicolas Cage and Freddie Highmore, this tale of a genius scientist and his mechanical son swoops onto consoles with a family-friendly ESRB rating of Everyone 10+. Astro Boy: TVG is a 2D game with 3D backgrounds, with some levels featuring platform-based action and others more like a modern side-scrolling shooter.

Borderlands (360 PS3)
Release: October 20 in North America, October 23 in the EU.
Borderlands is a fusion of post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max (1979) and computer gaming landmark adventure Diablo (1996). Up to four players can co-operate online, roaming the unexplored planet as monstrous beings emerge from a 7-year hibernation and extraterrestrial technologies wait to be discovered. Borderlands has a random content generation system that creates monsters, landscapes, and weapons on-the-go as players explore.

Forza Notorsport 3 (360)
Release: October 23 in the EU, October 27 in North America.
The Forza franchise merges the detail and technical accuracy of a simulation with the exhilaration of race track driving. Many participants are excited about not only going head-to-head online but also designing their own car livery. For car enthusiasts and good-time gamers alike this will be high on the list of most wanted titles towards the end of 2009.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP)
Release: 20 October (North America), 23 October (EU).
This, the 10th game in the controversial series of Grant Theft Auto games, now makes its way onto Sony's PSP after critical success on the Nintendo DS earlier in the year. That version gained top marks in many reviews including those from Giant Bomb, Eurogamer, Pocket Gamer, The Onion AV Club and The Independent. As Rockstar Leeds have been tweaking graphics but leaving core gameplay untouched for the PSP release, the PSP version looks very likely to follow suit.

Marvel Super Hero Squad (DS, PS2, PSP, Wii)

Marvel's roster of famous superheroes make another video game outing, this time in an even more caricatured form - big headed, small bodied, and in youngster-friendly bite size pieces. A spin off from Hasbro's line of Marvel Super Hero Squad action figures and accompanying the new tv series The Super Hero Squad Show that started its first season this November. As a video game, this is a multiplayer party game in the shape of a button-mashing brawler. Up to 20 Marvel characters are selectable and players can play with or against each other, according to the game mode.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 (360, PC, PS3)

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series is one of two main contenders in the association football genre, every year jostling with Electronic Arts' latest FIFA title for supremacy. In years gone past, PES had a reputation for innovation and playability, while FIFA reproduced the most popular teams, kits, player names and stadia. These days, they both have their fair share of critical and commercial endorsements.
  The Wii has its own version of the PES franchise, making innovative use of the Wii's hand held pointer controls, which will also be released in November along with the PS2 and PSP editions.
