YouTube Red launched, people quickly point out that new product has almost the same name as a porn site
The similarity could prove unfortunate for YouTube's users, as well as the site itself
Google has launched its new streaming service, known as YouTube Red, and it has been immediately mocked for sounding an awful lot like one of the world’s most popular porn sites.
YouTube Red is the company’s name for its paid-for subscription service, allowing people to get access to exclusive content and without ads. But it sounds a lot like RedTube, a site that allows people to get access to pornographic content, with ads.
The similarity is unfortunate for YouTube, which has spent much of the time since the announcement being ridiculed on social media. But it could also prove unfortunate for those looking for one or the other site — especially those looking for YouTube who ended up arriving somewhere much more explicit.
Security blogger Graham Cluley asked “What wombat in Google's marketing department thought it was a good idea to call YouTube's new service, YouTube Red?”
“It's hard to ignore that YouTube appears to have named its new service after a porn site,” he wrote.
Both YouPorn and RedTube are among the internet’s most well-used porn sites, and both take their name and much of their look from the Google-owned site.
YouTube Red costs $9.99 per month and allows people access to exclusive content made by creators like livestreamer PewDiePie, as well as offline and ad-free viewing of normal YouTube content.
