Money raised from The Independent's Christmas appeal will fund vital research into palliative care for children across the whole of the UK, an area that is often neglected.

This work is spearheaded by Professor Myra Bluebond-Langner, who heads the centre’s team of researchers and is dedicated to improving clinical practice and policy for children everywhere.

She said: “Paediatric palliative care is a relatively new field where practice has outstripped research.

"We look to change that. We need to provide an evidence base for all that we do for these seriously ill children and their families - and also for policy decisions. Our goal with everything we do is to reduce suffering and make a difference."
