THE GLORY of the world passes and the time arrives for the mellow, sunlit contemplation of a life spent in uncomplaining public service, a triumph here, a cock-up there. So it was that after the reshuffle Peter Brooke, former Minister for Fun, former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, former renderer of that embarrassing version of 'My Darling Clementine', was to be seen in the sunshine at the Serpentine, in Hyde Park, in a rowing boat, out for a carefree bit of paddling, with Mrs Brooke. Also on board, of course, was his personal protection officer. A funny old world, indeed.
