On 28 January 2021, The Independent published an article titled: Oxford don accused of ‘reinforcing violence against LGBTQ+ people’. It included a quote which suggested that, by acting for the Cayman Islands government, Dinah Rose was reinforcing the “continuum of violence against LGBTQ+ people throughout the Caribbean”. The Independent accepts that Ms Rose has not condoned or encouraged violence against LGBTQ+ people. The article also quoted a student as suggesting that Ms Rose could have returned her brief “without violating the law or ethical standards”. In fact, for a barrister to withhold their services on the ground that the nature of the case or beliefs of the client are objectionable would breach the Bar Standards Board Code. The Independent is happy to make these matters clear and apologises to Ms Rose for any misunderstanding.
