What does a director have to do to win an Oscar? It was fifth time unlucky for Martin Scorsese on Sunday night. The director of masterpieces such as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas failed once again to win the award for best director. Unfortunately, it is difficult to disagree with the Academy's decision this time. The Aviator is by no means Scorsese's best work - and inferior to Million Dollar Baby, which won the top award for Clint Eastwood.

But Scorsese should not despair. It will surely not be long before he is eligible for the lifetime achievement award. That is, surely, one Oscar that will not slip through his grasp.
