New music

Listeners to Classic FM have voted Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 their favourite piece of music for the fifth year in a row. We would not dispute the charms of Rachmaninov or of this concerto, but maybe it is time for Classic listeners to roam more widely. We suggest a policy of five wins and you are out. The station should stop giving its listeners too much of what they want, keep Rachmaninov to a minimum and blacklist this concerto for a year. We would propose instead a regular drive-time diet of Boulez and Schoenberg, topped off with plainsong - sponsored by the Rachmaninov Society to protect the exclusivity of the brand.
