Where would we be without think-tanks to tell us about trends in modern life that we might otherwise overlook in our haste to make it through the day without losing the car keys? Special thanks then to the Institute for Public Policy Research for looking up some old copies of the Radio Times and reminding us of the increasing number of television programmes aimed at children. Where four hours a week were broadcast in 1952, now we have 620.

Marvellous. What is even better is that many more are imports – the Americans and the Japanese are good at animation featuring a strong moral. And many more are repeats – so if your children miss them you can catch them later. Best of all, children's news programmes have not increased at all – worthy stuff in which each item of eco-propaganda ends "campaigners say".

One question. Where did all those episodes of The Magic Roundabout go?
