Resistance to change has long been both the curse and the blessing of these islands. A doughty distaste for any threat to ancient liberties is, sadly, all too often matched by a refusal even to consider bold initiatives in the social field. However, we warmly welcome a proposal from the new head of the Commission for Racial Equality to introduce citizenship tests for foreign nationals working here, in order to promote a respect for, and understanding of, our culture.
We're so keen, in fact, that we would like to offer a few sample questions. 1. Name a popular chopped-meat-in-bun outlet. 2. You want to order a coffee with frothy milk and a sprinkling of chocolate. What is it called? 3. Name the English national football and cricket coaches. 4. What language do you speak at home? 5. Who is in charge of our foreign policy (nb the answer has a "W" in the middle)?
