Deanne Jade, founder of the National Centre of Eating Disorders, says "fears about size are primitive" and may be evident in five-year- olds ("Fattism...", Real Life, 17 August). Really? The former Kabaka of Uganda's many wives were chosen for their size - the fatter the better. Nepalese friends assure me that their men avoid a skinny wife, and in the East generally, curves are prized. Are Oriental and African children more sophisticated than Europeans and able to throw off their "primitive" fears more quickly?
