Jeremy Forrest denies an offence of child abduction (PA)

He conducted a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old pupil at the school he formerly taught at, and fled the country with her when their relationship was threatened with exposure. Today a jury sentenced Jeremy Forrest to five and a half years for child abduction.

Opinion on Twitter was split with regards to the decision. Some felt the consensual nature of the relationship deserved leniency, others that Forrest's abuse of his position of trust merited any punishment that came his way.

Left-wing writer Sunny Hundal, while supporting the length of Forrest's sentence, tweeted: "Don't understand our justice system. Jeremy Forrest gets 5.5 years for abducting&abusing a minor; Stuart Hall got 15mths for 14 assaults?"
