YOUR correspondent Tom Hastie (Briefly, 6 March) asserts that 'grammar schools were abolished by Labour on ideological grounds'. I wonder why he did not mention that roughly three times as many secondary modern schools were also 'abolished on ideological grounds' at the same time. Does he wish them to be re-established, together with the 11-plus examination? If not, why not?
