If The Conservative majority of 8,183 in Wirral South in 1992 had really been 51 per cent of all votes cast ("Can Labour win in `Home Counties by the Mersey'", 12 January), it would have been the most curious result in the whole election. The Conservative majority was in fact 16.3 per cent of the 50,344 votes cast; it was the Conservative vote (25, 590) which was 50.8 per cent of the total.
