THE REPORT by Stephen Castle ('Nice work', 17 January) highlights the necessity for legislation banning Members of Parliament from remunerative posts. Not only do outside interests absorb time that should be spent on their parliamentary duties, but it can warp their judgement. MPs and their agents work diligently at election time to convince the electorate of their dedication and sincerity and then, when they have MP after their name, they look around for outside interests.

Legislation should decree that being an MP is a full-time occupation.
