Sir: On seeing the front-page photograph in today's Independent (showing Kenneth Clarke and Michael Portillo) my six-year-old son asked: 'Is that Laurel and Hardy?'

I assured him they weren't. However, they had better beware lest their epitaph becomes the famous duo's catchphrase: 'That's another fine mess you've got us into]'
