Letter: A man literally against democracy
Sir: After the spate of Literal Democrat, Official Liberal, Liberal, Official Anti-Federalist Conservative, Conservative Non Federalist, Labour 87 and Labour Regional Government candidates, is there not an overwhelming case for treating the names of political parties in the same way as trademarks, with the same copyright protection?
Those who stand in the European and other elections, using these titles, do so deliberately to confuse the voters, and in doing so draw away sincere support from the genuine organisations in a manner that is fraudulent. It is those parties and their members who have invested their time, energy and finance to create that support - not the imposters.
When the Harrods trade name was infringed, as it has been on a number of occasions in recent years, it had a rapid recourse to law. It is time that the same facility was extended to all our legitimate political parties.
Yours sincerely,
STEVE HARRIS
