Letter: A model for Mao
Sir: Monty may have admired Mao (Letters, 6 April), but Mao himself admired our very own Oliver Cromwell. That is to say, during his meeting with the Field Marshall, Mao persistently remarked: 'We must ask ourselves what Cromwell would have done.'
I was told this by Sir Denis Hamilton, who was present at the meeting, when I was writing about Cromwell in the early 1970s.
Yours faithfully,
