Sir: Carol Cooper (letter, 13 May) suggests that the pain of infertility is no worse than that of failing to publish a novel or qualify as a vet. Might I ask which member of her family she would be willing to exchange for another book or another professional qualification?
Such complacency, often shown by those whose children have arrived easily, fails to appreciate how powerful is the instinct to have children and how deep the wound when it is denied.
Yours sincerely,
