From Lord Hunt of Llanfair Waterdine Sir: While sharing the feelings of horror and revulsion of everyone for the appaling crimes of the Moors murderers, I write to ask by what right the Home Secretary has announced that Myra Hindley will never be released on life licence for her part in that dreadful crime.

Michael Howard has acquired quite a reputation for exceeding his powers, during his 18 months in office. He is surely doing so again by presuming to commit all future Home Secretaries never to refer Miss Hindley's case for future Parole Board.

Yours sincerely, JOHN HUNT Aston, Oxfordshire 16 December The writer was Chairman of the Parole Board for England and Wales, 1967-1973.
