Sir: I was astounded to read the news on the front page this morning ('U-turn over orchestra funding', 6 December) about the Arts Council's decision to 'swap the grants of the Philharmonia and the LPO'. What is it meant to achieve? It is like playing Monopoly, only it affects people's lives and undermines their confidence and commitment to musical excellence. I know many players in both orchestras and can understand their consternation and dismay over this sorry mess.
