Letter: All in a flap over wind theory

Sir: Andrew Cosgrove shows a common misunderstanding of chaos theory. Environmental change is caused by global effects, not local ones. Similarly, an avalanche is caused by the weight of snow. It has chaotic unpredictability because one does not know when or where the avalanche will happen. It could be set off by the flap of a butterfly's wing.
